I'm a WM die-hard... but my independent assessment would be:

1. Velocity has a much bigger and active user base, and hence more tools 
and add-ons exist for it already. However Velocity tools that are 
effectively Java beans should work fine in WebMacro too.

2. WebMacro has much nicer syntax and pluggable directives (i.e. 
#yourDirective)

3. My gut says WebMacro -may- perform better, but I've not seen any 
comparisons - now that would be interesting to port Lane's WM 
performance unit tests to use Velocity :)

4. WebMacro is slightly held back by its Broker mechanism which makes it 
slightly more difficult to integrate/embed in other applications - but 
this is not a big deal for normal usage.

5. WebMacro is the original :)
