I experienced this "forcing" not to be a bad thing. Sure, it takes a bit 
of freedom. But if you are involved in many different projects you will 
be happy if you find a structure you know in every one of it.
Also there are many possibilities to extend maven with ant(-tasks). So 
it's no complete non-ant solution.
