Adam is considering culling these two properties. I'd personally like to keep them. They are probably the only method of synchronising two boxes who do not share the same parent or a similar heritage. A great example is a popupable element. The popup part has to be in the surface box so it can be laid over any contents. How do you define the x and y for the popup if you have no way of ascertaining the globalx and globaly of the widget which owns the popup?
