AFAIK Debian either packages them seperately (if possible) or enables
everything... in the latter case, what do you get from Gentoo besides
saving a bit of disk space?

This may be a valid argument, but it is an organizational issue, not a
technical one.  In other words, Gentoo could have accomplished this
without completely reinventing the packaging system and breaking
compatability with Debian.  They should (IMHO) have just forked
Debian like Fink did.
