Except for the darwin bit, this is exactly what the intranet launcher
does.

This is a nice idea. I'll submit a separate patch for this when it's
done. In the meantime I would like to see the self-contained launcher (a much
better name than 'intranet launcher') patch evaluated separately. No
need to have these bits of code influence each other.
