I might still go with Java (which I'd prefer) but the BDB license is *really* wide-reaching. OpenLDAP has a explicit exception that allows non-opensource application connect with it; according to SleepyCat you are using their database even if you connect with an unrelated 3rd client application using widely recognized standard protocols (such as LDAP). I asked them what would happen if I wrote an GPL servlet running on Jetty which an IE user connected with and they said "We'll check with our licensing dept." Ouch. I had figured that was obvious enough that it would flush the discussion out, but appearantly not so. We'll see. The thing is that BDB/XML is a really good match for my needs (XML collection storage). The only other options I could find were Xindice (which seems to have a few issues regarding size of its database) and eXist (which has a few nice features but has data integrity issues and is a one-person effort). On the one side, and all-java install would ease deployment (no need for per-platform installs, single jar without dlls that need to go into appserver-global directories), on the other Sleepycat has a really good rep in the data integrity and speed realm. -- Emiliano
