There's a good call for this, as it's all getting applied to 
xwt.theme.surface at the moment. However what I was really hoping is 
we'd be able to apply() (or similar) the template straight onto the JS 
object surface.

But I'm not sure if that's a valid plan any more, I haven't looked into 
what's replaced apply().
