yes the idea is not to draw attention to it rather to prevent the instant 
change that does not our in real life in real life nothing is instantaneous 
but rather transitory

Matthew the oxygen animations are extremely subtle and not on your face, 
mostly fade in and fade out glows and transitions, the particular animation we 
are talking about makes IMO certain aspect of the UI look much more polished 
as the "flickering" is attenuated , i don't think that most cases it causes a 
usability problem and think that we can come up with some solution for 
specific problems,

I'm not saying I don't agree with you, i see your point and even agree  that 
in some specific cases it might be annoying, but i fell the bonus overlaps the 
negative points, and its worth trying to solve those negative points one by 
one.  

suggestion make the speed of this animation faster so its even less 
obstructive but keeps a bit of the transitory effect.
