there other location this is visible is in window titles; when the window 
title changes completely from thing to another, it's fine and "natural" 
looking. when the text is simply being appended to, it looks really odd. use 
case:

compose an email in kmail; start typing in the subject line, look at the 
window title. oof.

the heuristics would seem to be (at least to me):

* if changes are happening more than $TIMEOUT, don't animate them, just paint 
the changes

* if the change is an appending of text (e.g. from "this rock" to "this 
rocks") just paint it don't transition it

i don't know if either of those things can be done for 4.4. if not, i really 
do think that we should disable this particular animation and do it "right" 
for 4.5.

Nuno and Hugo are, imho, completely right that the transition does indeed 
serve a very real and positive purpose ... but it's also true that the 
behaviour Matthew notes is not great.

so, great idea, needs work, let's give ourselves the time to get it right and 
release it in good shape instead of potentially annoy people for 6 months 
during which time they'll come to dislike what is actually quite a likable 
feature once those few problems are taken care of.
