Another interesting idea would be to use hash-based generated user pictures, 
like they are known from WordPress & Gravatar & Co.

In the Gnome camp they had even the nice idea to use these in the addressbook 
for people without a given picture:

Should also be applyable to the system users. At least as option to generate 
one's avatar. Ideally there would be a plugin-based mechanism, so people could 
do their own avatar generator or whatever source to generate a picture.

The most simple one would simply be the old
	"Pick a picture from some nice default pictures".
A better one, as other option, would be
	"Take a picture with your webcam".
And then there would be the generating ones:
	"Create a Robohash"
	...
