Not to go too much offtopic, but you can't really reserve the rights for the 
idea. You can for the image you created, but even if some corporation took it 
and implemented it, your claim wouldn't really stand on firm grounds. You 
could have patented it, but as Nuno points out, it has prior art.

Yes, MeeGo had a quite similar UI. Don't know how well it worked, I wasn't 
particularly satisfied with it (had it on the WeTab before it was squashed 
under the Plasma Active installation). The main problem I see is that you need 
to take a whole column even if there are not enough items to be shown in it*. 
Otherwise, the concept is nice.

* this is where marco's newspaper (plasma netbook) layout really shines.
