I'm inclined to think that if the US really were so bad, we'd be seeing large emigration combined with dwindling immigration, and a government response to prevent that emigration. No, I'm not suggesting that the most-free country should be determined by a popularity contest. But if America really were so bad I'd expect *some* signs of people fleeing. Remember the Berlin Wall? Ever notice how many Iraqi exiles there are, or think about why someone would try to cross from Cuba to Florida on a flimsy raft? We actually observe the opposite, though. People come to America from around the world. Shaquille O'Neal didn't defect to Australia during the 2000 Olympics. It's Canada that's suffering a "brain drain" to America. I'd also expect to see government attacks on critics, but I don't. After Michael Moore denounced the president on national television, he didn't end up disappearing into some re-education camp in the middle of Montana.
