I truly can't imagine how. Waiting for urpmi to download stuff only to have 
rpm return dependency conflicts is all too predictable an event here. I wish 
they'd used apt-rpm instead, which is (supposed to be) much better. Yes, I 
appreciate apt-rpm didn't exist at the time the decision was made.

Same here, except cooker. It just never works.

I end up building most things from source, which of course only makes the 
problem worse. I definitely try to avoid this with libraries.

I'd sooner just go back to Slack, which has always worked perfectly for me, no 
matter how much I tweak it. The slightest attempt to customise MDK, like, for 
example, installing anything, consistently yields no results but disaster.
