PPP over SSH?

Has anyone done PPP over SSH before?  

I have root on the client, but no root on the server.  I only want to
add new routes to the client, so I don't see why I should need root on
the server.  Yet, pppd seems to refuse to run as non-root.

Is there a way around that, or should I do SLIP with SLiRP instead?
