Probably a sign of good Microsoft design, where the decoding part of the codec is clean and not tied to many internal system calls, so they can easily wrap the decoder DLL. Some questions: how do I pause (space) and then watch frame by frame in mplayer? Haven't figured this out yet. Also, how to skip an arbitrary number of seconds instead of the default which is 5 or 10 or so. Precise seeks are quite a pain with mplayer currently.
