I'm very sure that he /meant/ it as flamebait.  You should read the
archives of kde-core-devel at the time.  He was in the middle of a
discussion with the rest of KDE about him thinking it was
inappropriate for KDE to black out the website, saying "
              So KDE CVS is now officially a platform for political
              protest?
", after which he added the credits to his apps.  It is quite clear to
me that he didn't just happen to be committing this at the same time
as the flamewar about the website, but committed it just to make his
point about the political statements thing.

I don't see how you can see this as anything else than outright troll
behaviour..
