Oh, all the Mandrake bashing...

I never had one serious problem with my Mandrake boxes. Never lost 
configuration, never had a non-booting system, or whatever... Absolutely 
nothing to complain about. It's still the best distro out there for all my 
desktop needs. (Oh well, I even use it for my router.)

I bought my newest PC short after Mandrake 9.1 was released. My hardware might 
be quite exotic to some, but it was the first distro to support my PC 
out-of-the-box (except for 1 kernel parameter I had to pass, but which was 
removed after a kernel update to 2.4.21 final). The other distros had trouble 
at 3 points: they didn't support my chipset (kernel issue), they didn't 
support my on-board network card (kernel), they didn't support my ATI card 
(XFree).

Just last week, I wanted to install my USB scanner in Linux. I had never done 
anything like this and I started searching the net how sane works, whether my 
scanner was supported, what firmware was necessary, etc... At the point of 
being discouraged with all these steps I had to take to make it work, I found 
out about "scannerdrake". I just ran it, it downloaded all necessary sane 
packages, it did auto-detect my scanner and configured it properly. All I had 
to do in this process was pressing the "Quit" button and that was it! This is 
just to say how good the drake utilities are... I was really amazed.

You can always find some disadvantages in other distros. e.g. RH crippled KDE, 
SuSE being non-free, Gentoo wasting your time, Debian being too complicated, 
... and just maybe Mandrake has trouble with your hardware or your 
personality :-)
