Umm. In short, I had exactly the same problem.

No, really. Was I not clear on this?

Or maybe it's all a spectacular coincidence. But it seems to me that if two 
people experience the same problem with the same version of the same 
distribution on different machines, while one of those people also 
experienced the same problem with different versions of the same distribution 
on the same machine, but does not experience the problem with other 
distributions on the same machine, with the same usage patterns throughout, 
that just maybe, the distribution might be to blame.

Unless, of course, you consider the fact that other people, using the same 
version of the same distribution on different machines with different usage 
patterns evidence to the contrary, in which case it becomes clear that in 
fact myself and Tim absent-mindedly typed rm -rf ~/.kde and then forgot about 
it the next morning, possibly as the result of some kind of drunken stupor.

Well, I'm using ReiserFS and, except for a very brief period during my first 
flirtation with Linux, always have done, and for the purpose of argument I 
will assume Tim has too.

In this case, IIRC Mandrake 9.1 and Slackware 9.0 both use the same kernel 
(2.4.20), and so, you'd expect, the same ReiserFS code.

Except, of course, Mandrake patch their kernel into oblivion without checking 
if it still works afterwards, and so that might well have caused an 
incompatibility with ReiserFS. Ergo, in this case, that is Mandrake's fault. 
Please construct similar arguments for any other chain of consquences that 
you may imagine.

Also, no argument along those lines explains the fact that I've had this 
problem in other versions of Mandrake dating back to 8.0 (when I was using 
ext2fs, purely out of ignorance).

Although ext2fs, were I still using it, would of course explain the problem 
beautifully.

Umm, I believe that the common term for what you are describing is 'wisdom'. 
So I will take this as a compliment.

It doesn't. But the reverse is also true.
