I doubt reporters would have been close enough to the actual operation to 
actually hear an old guy in a hole say "I surrender".

And if they staged this up, wouldn't you think the 1st thing the real Saddam 
would do would be to somehow prove he's still alive, therefore ridiculing the 
US ?

I think you're a bit too inclined to give into conspiration theories. :-)
