in a sentence, because richard nixon, seeing the space program as a 
creature of the kennedy presidency (and seeing kennedy get credit for 
our landing on the moon, even though the first moon landing was six 
months to the day into the nixon presidency), hated it and cut it back 
by canceling the last three apollo moonshots and signing off on that 
atrocity, the shuttle.
