never was in bed with ximian. but i agree with esr that kde will 
sputter, fade, and die, which belief brings me no pleasure at all. it 
will probably survive longer than, say, lindows does, but it's headed 
gradually for the door.

the reason gnome will become the one standard linux desktop is almost 
entirely a matter of attitude on the part of developers and promoters, 
especially the latter. gnome clearly has done better than kde in this 
regard, though the bar wasn't set very high.

and i think that that's a terrible tragedy, because at least through kde 
2.x, kde was very good, headed almost completely in the right 
direction, and promised to be not just the best linux desktop, but by 
far the best desktop for any platform. unfortunately, it was believed, 
or people acted as if it was believed, that the kde effort could piss 
off everyone in sight with impunity. good lord, when the ximians bought 
google ads opposite kde on google and the kde crowd was right in being 
outraged, the face of that outrage was such that the ximians actually 
scored the p.r. win from it. and gnome hasn't been secretive and weird 
nor, actually, has ximian.

if having the better technology were the dispositive factor, there never 
would have been widespread use of vhs -- everyone would have run beta. 
it's clearly not. there are other factors. attitude and active 
promotion are among them. kde lost in those areas. it's very sad, but 
that is how it turned out. and i'll not undertake a polemic in 
connection with it, because time will demonstrate that i am correct.
