Yup.  At least I got my answer.  There's no interface, documented or 
not, that I can use to reliably do things the way they're currently done.

Properly is when you have an app like konqueror, and you want to make a 
dialog, use a QDialog iwth the konqueror window as the parent, rather 
than executing a new process that starts a totally fresh (and unrelated 
window), thus bypassing qt's management of windows.
