Rather shocked, I looked at the Mail List tab and found the "mail to" format was filled in for me. Don't know how that happend. I then noticed that all my mailing folders had the the correctly formatted Mailing List tab entry. I have no idea why. But it works now. Perhaps after I check the "Folder holds a mailing list" box, the next time message came into that folder, KMail updated the info in the Mail List tab field.
