Why not use the new "Hot new stuff" technology (http://www.kstuff.org).

I like your idea. The apt system is great but it is tailored for the
command line, they are a lot of thing missing in description of apps
(screenshot, developer website, newbie friendly description). Another
weakness of apt is that if you install KOffice, you have afterwards to
install manually the localization package for your country, when it should
be done automatically based on your locale.

Is it really impossible to create a nice frontend à la Click&Run or
RedCarpet and when you click on install KMyapplication, the system asks
the root password and then a backend will run apt-get install
KMyapplication or urpmi KMyapplication or yum KMyapplication

I think what Dominique are proposing is something different that Kapture
targetted at newbie and untechnical users. Kaptitude is more for Debian
users who don't want to use the command line but understand the Debian
package system.
