This tool is mostly for sysadmins; final users are not expected to
change alternatives (that's the job of a script or another higher level
user tool). Anyway I also tought about that problem, one solution would
be to find to which package every alternative belongs (with dpkg
- -S and a cache because dpkg -S is very slow, or is there a better way to
know what package a file belongs to?) and displaying them as tooltips.
