Yes, it is bad that everything is hardcoded into it.

All those approaches don't bing configurability of Free Software in general a 
single step further. They are only of limited use (distribution company 
specific).

I think that depends. Being able to quickly make changes and not hardcoding 
large programs is good. GST backends hardcode everything in perl. A new 
functionality needs a new large  "all distro" backand module and new frontend 
modules in every frontend.

Externalizing a light distribution independent and collaboratively maintained 
common config access functionality however benefits Free Software in general.

So it is not that a bad idea, but CFG is a much better approach to this I 
think. There the backends and middlelayer is written without any distribution 
or config specific hardcoding. These specifics are provided with external 
meta-config files easy to adopt.
