Heh, I doubt you will be dupclicating work.  :)

As far as places to start, I can think of two.  

(1) Look at Bruce's userlinux-desktop meta-package and break out the pieces 
that are not Gnome-specific, and use this to create a userlinux-desktop-base 
meta package. 

(2)  Another place is in the archives of this list--on Dec. 18th there was a 
Workstation App List thread that discussed what apps would be included on a 
basic workstation.  That thread might have some useful info.
