Hi there,

Today I put together a metapackage for (kalyxo-office) based on the
"Workstation App list" thread in the archives, and the
user-linux-desktop package. Plus a couple I threw in. I followed the
Wiki page Bruce posted the other day to create the metapackage. These
are the control file dependencies:

Depends: cupsys, cupsys-client, cupsomatic-ppd, gimp, gimp-data-extras,
gimp-manual, gimp-perl, gimp-python, gimpprint-doc, gimpprint-locales,
hylafax-client, hylafax-doc, mozilla-browser, ooqs-kde, openoffice.org,
openoffice.org-mimelnk, openoffice.org-thesaurus, xpdf, smbclient,
smbfs, nfs-common, wine, wine-doc, wine-utils, winesetuptk,
x-ttcidfont-conf, kdm, kdebase, kopete, kaddressbook, kalarm,
kdepim-kfile-plugins, kdepim-kio-plugins, kgpgcertmanager, kmail, kfax,
konqueror, kget, krdc, krfb, scribus, kdict, ksnapshot, kcolorchooser,
kcontrol, kedit, kdirstat, k3b, kprinter, kooka, kmix, kscd, kmines,
kpat, frozen-bubble :-)

The test setup goes like this:
- Sarge default net install (2/18/04 snapshot). [1]
- Reboot into base-config.
- Edit sources.list for local apt-proxy cache (sarge/sid). [2]
- Tasksel X Window System only.
- Install kalyxo-office deb. [3]
- Debconf stuff.
- Reboot to KDE :-)
It takes about 35 minutes total, from booting the d-i cd to kde login.

Thoughts on the process -

- Thanks to Bruce and others, building the task package is super quick.
It was by far the easiest part of the process. So, if we want the whole
list changed, more metapackages created, whatever, it's easy. It's the
install-from-scratch with each new deb that chews up time.

- I'm not that satisfied with the end result for an office/enterprise
desktop. For instance, I'd rather not have Exim or Mutt installed at
all (and some others from the default Sarge install). I tried four or
five different builds, removing more packages each time. Finally got
one that didn't pull any strange packages in, and seems to function
correctly. The new KDE3.2 menus will be a nice improvement.

- Where are we going with task packages? Still want different Office,
Wkstn, Devel packs? Wait for KDE3.2 to get to sid before more testing?

That's all for now, bye.
-Liz

[1] Third snapshot in a row where base-config reboots during BIOS probe
on the new hardware I purchased :-( Finally gave up and moved the test
to an older PC that works.
[2] Slow link here. Downloading kde3.2 overnight tonight for testing
later.
[3] Didn't set up the apt repository. dpkg -i plus apt-get -f install
works fine. The package pulls in about 250 files/200mb.
