Using worse defaults on all screens because one in a million screens has an
EDID this very broken isn't great.

Yeah, that sounds better. The kernel has a list of EDID quirks, you can alm=
ost
certainly add your screen to it (or make a bug report for your graphics card
vendor, so they add it for you).
