One additional use case worth considering is gaming performance. Gamescope can
already expose a higher virtual resolution and downsample it, but when used
nested under a Plasma Wayland session it introduces an additional compositor
stage.

Would it be possible for KWin to use DRM/KMS plane scaling or the GPU display
engine for the final higher-resolution-to-native-resolution downscale when
supported by the driver?

For example on AMD:

2560x1440 framebuffer -> AMD display scaler -> 1920x1080 physical mode

This could potentially provide functionality much closer to AMD VSR/NVIDIA DSR
without requiring nested Gamescope.
