A further idea:

On first opening a more well known link type, the system could bring up a
dialogue window where it asks whether the user wants the link to open in the
default browser, or a dedicated app, widening the reach of how many users see
this feature on a day-to-day usage. I say "well known" so plasma wouldn't have
to ship with a bunch of url strings.

If the link doesn't have an app installed, this dialogue window could also
offer to download/ search for one that can associate/open said link(s), using
discover for example.

This could look something like the "Choose Application" window that is already
there for file types, and I just see that it already has the find in discover
feature, neat!
