It shouldn't actually matter if Akonadi is disabled when you run kalarm the
first time - in that case the migration is supposed to just fail and kalarm
should then create the calendar files, although clearly something is going
wrong there. When you say that Akonadi is initially disabled in Kubuntu, do you
mean that it is actually prevented from running, or is it just waiting for an
application to activate it?

I forgot that once the calendar files exist, you can then enable the Akonadi
plugin if you wish without ill effect (unless of course you don't like Akonadi,
which has its own problems).
