Works as expected for me on KDE Linux.

Your reference to the buttons looking like an X and a wrench indicate that
you're using a 3rd-party icon theme. Can you create a new clean user account on
the same computer with no customization, put a Dictionary widget on your
desktop, and try to reproduce the issue again?

If it does still reproduce, please attach a screen recording showing it happen.
