            Bug ID: 524401
Summary: KDE neon: FreeRDP 3.30.0 package transition causes
pkcon update to fail and apt full-upgrade to propose
                    removing Remmina RDP support
    Classification: KDE Neon
           Product: neon
      Version First unspecified
       Reported In:
          Platform: Neon
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Packages User Edition
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
                CC: [email protected], [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

Environment
KDE neon User Edition
Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble)
Architecture: amd64
Installed FreeRDP packages

Currently installed:

libfreerdp3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2
libfreerdp-client3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

The currently installed Ubuntu packages are internally consistent.

KDE neon repository versions

The KDE neon repository currently provides:

libfreerdp3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3
libfreerdp-client3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3

Both packages are available at the same newer version from the KDE neon
repository.

Problem 1: pkcon update fails

Running:

sudo pkcon update

fails with:

Getting updates                         [=========================]
Finished                                [=========================]
Loading cache                           [=========================]
Testing changes                         [=========================]
Finished                                [=========================]
Fatal error: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libfreerdp-client3-3: Depends: libfreerdp3-3
  (= 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2)
but 3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3 is to be installed

PackageKit therefore sees the newer KDE neon libfreerdp3-3 but cannot satisfy
the exact-version dependency of the currently installed libfreerdp-client3-3.

Problem 2: apt full-upgrade proposes removing Remmina RDP support

Running:

sudo apt full-upgrade --simulate

also encounters the same dependency conflict.

APT's resolver reports:

Broken libfreerdp-client3-3:amd64 Depends on
libfreerdp3-3:amd64
(= 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2)

Considering libfreerdp3-3:amd64 7 as a solution
Removing libfreerdp-client3-3:amd64 rather than change libfreerdp3-3:amd64

It subsequently identifies that remmina-plugin-rdp depends on
libfreerdp-client3-3 and adds it to the removal list.

The simulated transaction therefore contains:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libfreerdp-client3-3
  remmina-plugin-rdp

The detailed simulation later confirms:

Remv remmina-plugin-rdp
Remv libfreerdp-client3-3

This is undesirable because a normal system upgrade would remove Remmina's RDP
plugin as a consequence of the FreeRDP transition.

Expected behavior

The FreeRDP packages should be transitioned together from the Ubuntu versions:

libfreerdp3-3
3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

libfreerdp-client3-3
3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

to the KDE neon versions:

libfreerdp3-3
3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3

libfreerdp-client3-3
3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3

without removing either FreeRDP client library or remmina-plugin-rdp.

Actual behavior

Both normal update mechanisms encounter the transition problem:

pkcon update fails with an unmet exact-version dependency.
apt full-upgrade resolves the conflict by proposing removal of
libfreerdp-client3-3.
This in turn causes remmina-plugin-rdp to be removed.

I have therefore not performed the upgrade.

Reproduction
PackageKit
sudo pkcon update

Result:

Fatal error: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libfreerdp-client3-3: Depends: libfreerdp3-3
(= 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2)
but 3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3 is to be installed
APT
sudo apt full-upgrade --simulate

Result:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libfreerdp-client3-3
  remmina-plugin-rdp
Repository information

The relevant versions are:

KDE neon:
libfreerdp3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3
libfreerdp-client3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-1+24.04+noble+release+build3

Ubuntu Noble:
libfreerdp3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2
libfreerdp-client3-3 3.30.0+dfsg-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

Both packages at the newer KDE neon version are present in the repository.

Question

Could the KDE neon FreeRDP package transition be adjusted so that the
Ubuntu-to-neon version transition is handled atomically/coherently by APT and
PackageKit?

In particular, the current repository state appears to cause:

pkcon update
        ↓
unmet dependency

apt full-upgrade
        ↓
remove libfreerdp-client3-3
        ↓
remove remmina-plugin-rdp

The currently installed Ubuntu FreeRDP package pair is working correctly, so I
have left it installed rather than forcing the transition.
