It seems to depend on the syntax-highlighter. For instance with Python or C++ auto-close is happening for apostrophes. I don't know how that is controlled. The highlighter XMLs don't seem to contain any definition for that. Anyway, with HTML, XHTML and XML apostrophes are normally not auto-closed, but only in front of < and &.
