Bug ID: 524452
Summary: Support tethering situations without re-pairing each
time
Classification: Applications
Product: kdeconnect
Version First 26.04.3
Reported In:
Platform: Android
OS: Android 11.x
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: android-application

Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
kdeconnect works quite well in most situations, but has one notable exception:
When tethering your computer to your phone, either via USB or WIFI, kdeconnect
does not work by default,
but requires manually adding the IP each time.
This is because Android chooses to use a different subnet and IP each time.
Therefore, I propose automatic support for this situation, by detecting a
tethering / wifi hotspot situation, and if it is the case, trying to find
kdeconnect on systems connected to said tether / hotspot.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect both your PC/laptop and your phone to the same network, and pair
them.
2. Go somewhere else (like on a road trip or camping etc), and use your phone’s
tethering / hotspot to go online with your PC/laptop
3. Try to use kdeconnect to quickly get some pictures/videos onto your
PC/laptop for editing, or the like.
OBSERVED RESULT
kdeconnect does not detect the paired device.
But after finding the IP of the PC/laptop manually (`ip addr`), and adding it
to the list of manual IPs on your phone’s kdeconnect app, it works.
But only until you disable tethering / the hotspot. It won’t work the next time
you re-enable it again. Making it very tedious.
EXPECTED RESULT
kdeconnect should be able to realize it’s a tethered connection, and
automatically find the PC/laptop again, regardless of the internal subnet IP it
has behind the phone’s NAT. (Presuming kdeconnect supports IPv6 too, it must
already be able to handle detecting local subnets and IPs that change more
often due to prefix delegation or the like. So that existing code could
probably be used as a template.)
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Gentoo Linux 2.18
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.28.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Please do not close this as a ”duplicate” for bugs asking for general support
for tethering/hotspots, as this is specifically about *not having to re-pair
each time*,
as without that, it’s basically useless, as it is less cumbersome to just use
`adb pull` or the like. Which shouldn’t be, given that kdeconnect’s whole point
is to make this sort of thing easy. :-)
