From what I understand, the author has a copy of the GST backends and stuff contained in his source distribution. There are no other dependencies that you need to worry about. The GST stuff is being developed and maintained by the Gnome folks of course. Provided that it works, and it seems to do that, I don't see why we should replace it. If in the future our requirements change and we need to make a new tool, so what.
