from my experience the biggest memory consumption nowadays comes from the web 
browsers. With several windows, several tabs each, it eats several gigabytes.
It actually doesn't matter that much, how much memory the desktop (...or even 
the OS) uses.
Also, maybe the web browser itself cannot do much about it, since it's 
probably all the javascript running inside it.

Anyway, if you can contribute to make KDE run faster/use less memory, great !
