edit utf-8 encoded text-file

I have a plain text file encoded using utf-8. I have seen a Kate screenshot 
showing unicode files with the proper charset but my text-file show up with 
multibyte chars.

How does Kate handle multibyte characters (utf-8)? Do I need to configure 
unicode fonts to view utf-8 encoded files?? If so how would I configure my 
system to handle this? My system is an out-of-the-box RH 7.3 and KDE 3.0.
