Installed from:    compiled sources
Compiler:          gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)
OS:          Linux (i686) release 2.4.19-ck7

To reproduce:
1. Open several files in kate. Take note of which files are open.
2. Close kate.
3. Open kate again.
4. All files except for the first file in the list are re-opened.

Each time you close/open Kate, the file list gets shorter by 1.
