Configuring KDE-KATE to use other highlighting syntaxes

Hi all,

I am an EE and wish to use KATE to write programs for the ATMEL AVR. 

I would like to know the format of the files for syntax highlighting and 
where they are added, so I can configure an option up for the AVR asembler 
instructions.
