Unlike earlier versions, Kate 2.1 (which comes with KDE 3.1Beta1) displays the tab character always as N spaces (as set in the configuration) regardless of which column the character is in. 

An example of incorrect behaviour (I'm using spaces to illustrate the effect, so please view this in a monospace font. The period (.) indicates a tab character):

a.      b
aa.      b
aaa.      b
aaaa.      b

The way this should look is:

a.      b
aa.     b
aaa.    b
aaaa.   b

Note that his problem disappeares if "Replace tabs with spaces" is checked. This, thought, doesn't help with files that already contain tabs when opened.
