Hello,
Kate is a nice effort towards a powerful and user-friendly multimodal editor. Yet, I'll stick to Nedit, which I find much more powerful and usable. Especially, although I don't use the more powerful features like macros, I really miss the clever use of the mouse in Nedit. If you try Nedit, you'll understand why :
Ctrl+Left click allows you to select a square block and move it around by dragging it with the middle button. The text automatically wraps around the moved block. This spectacular feature is extremely useful, and once you get used to it, you just miss it everywhere else.
For example, if you want to easily indent a badly indented block, you just select it and move it to where you want it to be.
Besides the usual way, you can copy/paste by positionning the cursor where you want to paste, AND THEN, underlining the text to copy by clicking the middle mouse button and dragging the mouse over the text.
Right mouse click brings a user editable menu, with the usual options like cut/copy/paste (although I never use them), "Open selection" or "Find selection".
The find bar is also a very handy feature in Nedit.
These are some of the many things that make Nedit a very powerful editor, and that Kate lacks.
