Getting *rid* of empty lines

Following on from the above thread, is there any way to get rid of empty 
lines?  In other words, do these empty lines serve any real purpose, or are 
they just there to enable you to format the string nicely onscreen.  I got 
the latter impression from reading the gettext manual, but is that correct?
