Automatic translation question

Hello,
I am curious how the automatic, "rough" translation works in kbabel.
Where does it get the data from? Are there any ways to add more/own
"sources" so that the automatic translation becomes more accurate?

Maybe someone can give me some hints or point me to some good papers.
