yes your proposal looks great.

you know, now I'm used to it, I can cope with the current behaviour, so it's
possible to learn it. And now I know it,  I can see the little icon change and
think it's actually very nicely done. But I'd prefer to set it to the right
hand one. I actually generally have all toolbars hidden, as I'm generally on a
small screen and need the space. 

I noticed that when the icons are set to display text only, then the button
changes to just "Close", rather than "Close Left" or "Close Right".
