Probably because no matter what I do, I can't get it into this unclean state (at least fsck.exfat always reports it as clean), so it mounts normally next time. I believe that may be intentional. Seems the exfat kernel driver for exfat was replaced in 2020 with Linux 5.7, so this behavior could be the default now.
