I had this problem happen about a week ago. I thought it was a different bug. But, it's exactly as described here. KMail 1.9.4. The index file(s) may get corrupted because when shutting down computer from KDE it does not let some of the processes finish normally (they may be just "killed"). I notice this with KNode: when shutting down I can see a window with flashing "Deleting expired articles from <newsgroup>" (or something like it), but not all newsgroups are reported. Seems like the processes just gets interrupted. Same thing may happen with KMail.
