I am suffering this bug (which has been assigned for 5 years!). I am running openSuse 10.2 with kmail, I have several folders containing between 5-20,000 emails (!), but I was suffering from this bug even before I had such full folders. In addition to the kmail gui freezing, my kicker panel and kickoff menu freeze and sometimes crash whilst kmail is downloading email. This bug is really dysfunctional and is a real blocker.
