I'm just another user, but I'm at a loss: I have never had a problem with KMail's UI freezing or blocking while checking new mail. I can freely use KMail in any way while it's downloading mail. I have one local mail account (/var/spool type), and two disconnected-IMAP accounts. I have them set to automatically check every 20 minutes, and I also hit the button manually sometimes. I've used KMail for a couple of years now, and I've never had any such problems.
I'm on Debian testing/unstable with KMail 1.9.5 from 4:3.5.5.dfsg.1-6.
